You know the names: Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec. But despite the efforts of these major—some might say “monolithic”—software developers in the operating system, database, and internet security fields, there are small companies and open source software consortiums operating in these markets as well. These big company’s products have name brand value, but some of the most innovative products in these fields are coming from the smaller players you may never have heard of.
Not every software program has a wonderful open source competitor, and even in cases where open source alternatives exist, not every small business should use them.
